ROSACEA: learn what your triggers are

For those who suffer from ROSACEA, redness and inflamed skin can be a challenge to treat. Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that causes redness on the nose, cheeks, chin and forehead. For some, the redness can coexist with bumps and acne-like breakouts, as well as inflammation and redness. It typically affects women with fair skin which blushes easily. The cause for this condition is unclear, however, it seems to be hereditary.

Unlike acne, Rosacea is not caused by bacteria; in fact, science isn't absolutely certain why people get it in the first place. If you have Rosacea, your best defense is a good offense; learn your triggers and know what causes your flare-ups in the first place. Flare-ups occur when something causes the blood vessels in the face to expand: too much alcohol consumption, sun exposure, wind exposure, hot weather, stress, rubbing or scrubbing of the skin, eating spicy foods and taking hot baths or saunas. If you suffer from bad flare-ups, a doctor can prescribe medication to help you manage that. However, my recommendation would be to treat your skin as if it were über-sensitive: use mild, milky cleansers that are fragrance free, use a mild alcohol-free toner, always hydrate with a fragrance-free, light moisturizer (SPF during the day), drink plenty of water and never EVER use granular scrubs to exfoliate your face (scrubs will irritate sensitive skin!). Treat Rosacea-skin gently, never tug and always pat gently with soft cotton or a tissue.
